Every year, thousands of students from Moga and across Punjab sit across from us with the same four names on their list: New Zealand, UK, Canada, and Australia. All four offer world-class degrees, English-medium teaching, and a path to work abroad after graduation. So how do you actually choose?
We have broken down the 2026 numbers — visa fees, proof of funds, tuition, work rights, and what happens after you graduate — so you can decide with real facts, not just word-of-mouth from a neighbour's cousin.

1. Visa Fees — New Zealand Is the Most Affordable Door In
This is where 2026 has changed the game completely. Australia and the UK have both made their visas significantly more expensive, while New Zealand has stayed comparatively reasonable.
Australia's student visa fee now works out to roughly ₹1.1 lakh — before you have paid a single rupee in tuition. New Zealand's fee is a fraction of that. And that is just to get in: Australia's post-study work visa (subclass 485) fee doubled to AUD 4,600 in early 2026, adding another ₹2.5 lakh to your total cost of the journey.
2. Proof of Funds — How Much Cash You Need Before You Apply
This is often the deciding factor for Punjab families, since it determines how much you must arrange before you even submit your visa application.
- New Zealand: NZD 20,000 per year for living costs (roughly ₹9.5–10 lakh), plus tuition. The lowest bar of the four countries.
- Australia: AUD 29,710 per year for living costs alone (roughly ₹16 lakh) — a steep increase from previous years.
- Canada: CAD 22,895 (roughly ₹14 lakh) for a single applicant plus tuition. Canada also scrapped its faster Student Direct Stream, so processing now takes longer for everyone.
- UK: Maintenance funds vary by course and city but London-specific requirements make total living costs high once you factor in the Immigration Health Surcharge.
3. Tuition — Where Your Money Actually Goes Further
Tuition is the other half of the budget conversation, and here too New Zealand holds a clear advantage for most courses.
- New Zealand: Bachelor's degrees roughly NZD 25,000–42,000 per year. Master's roughly NZD 20,000–45,000 per year. PhD fees are subsidised to near-domestic rates (NZD 6,500–9,000 per year) — by far the best deal in the world for research degrees.
- Australia: Tuition has been climbing steadily at 6%+ per year and now frequently exceeds NZ equivalents for similar courses.
- UK: One-year Master's programmes look cheaper on paper but the Immigration Health Surcharge (now GBP 1,035 per year for students) and London living costs add up quickly.
- Canada: Tuition is competitive in some provinces, but the loss of SDS processing and rising proof-of-funds requirements have made the overall package costlier than before.
4. Post-Study Work Rights — The Real Reason Most Students Choose a Country
For most Indian students, the post-study work visa is the actual decision point. This is where New Zealand has made the most significant moves in 2026 — and where Australia has made things dramatically worse.
New Zealand: Graduates with a Level 7+ bachelor's, master's, or PhD get an open work visa for up to 3 years — no job offer required, free to work for any employer in any sector. From 16 November 2026, New Zealand is also adding a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa (6 months of open work rights) for diploma-level graduates. New Zealand is actively opening doors while others are closing them.
Australia: The Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa fee jumped from AUD 2,300 to AUD 4,600 in March 2026 — more than double. The eligible age limit for some categories has also been cut from 50 to 35.
Canada: The Post-Graduation Work Permit remains available, but provincial intake caps mean getting into your preferred province is no longer guaranteed regardless of your profile strength.
UK: The Graduate Route visa (2 years post-study) now costs GBP 880 to apply for, plus the mandatory Immigration Health Surcharge on top.
5. Processing Time and Approval Certainty for Indian Students
New Zealand's student visa typically processes in 25–40 working days, with clear and consistent requirements. Australia reclassified India into its strictest visa risk category in January 2026 — meaning more documentation, longer delays, and a statistically higher chance of refusal for our students specifically.
This is something every Moga family should know before paying an Australian university's application fee. The rules for Indian applicants in Australia have shifted in 2026, and not in your favour.
6. Permanent Residency — How Quickly Can You Actually Settle?
- New Zealand: Two new residence pathways open in August 2026 — the Skilled Work Experience Pathway and Trades & Technician Pathway. Work experience required for several PR categories has dropped from 3 years to just 2. For healthcare, IT, construction, engineering, or agriculture graduates, the path from "student visa" to "resident" has genuinely shortened.
- Australia: Employer-sponsored PR typically requires 3–4 years of work experience and is increasingly competitive. Recent age limit cuts also affect long-term planning.
- Canada: Express Entry is province-dependent and heavily points-based. Strong profiles can get PR in 1–3 years, but the system is unpredictable and draw cutoffs have risen sharply.
- UK: The Skilled Worker visa leading to Indefinite Leave to Remain requires 5 continuous years of residence — the longest timeline of the four countries.
So Which Country Is Right for You?
There is no single answer for every student — it depends on your course, budget, and long-term goals. But on the 2026 numbers:
- Choose New Zealand if you want lower upfront costs, a genuinely open 3-year post-study work visa, a faster PR pathway in skill-shortage fields, and a visa process that has not been targeting Indian applicants with extra scrutiny.
- Choose Australia if your course and university are strong enough to justify the much higher fees and tighter checks — and you can comfortably show AUD 29,710+ in funds.
- Choose Canada if you have a province-specific plan, a strong academic profile, and can meet the higher proof-of-funds bar.
- Choose UK if you specifically want a fast 1-year Master's and the two-year post-study work option, and do not mind higher city living costs.
The rules are more layered than they were even two years ago, and most applications fall apart not because the student was not capable — but because one document was weak, one country was chosen based on outdated information, or the visa category did not match the actual post-study plan.
